George Gershwin groeide op in een armoedige buurt in New York. Zijn ouders waren Russische immigranten die maar met moeite de eindjes aan elkaar konden knopen. Toch besloten ze om een oude piano aan te schaffen, zodat Ira Gershwin het kon gaan maken als musicus. Alleen bleek niet Ira, maar z’n jongere broer George het muzikale genie te zijn. Ira legde zich toe op het schrijven van teksten en samen werden de broers Gershwin absolute grootheden in de twintigste eeuwse musicalwereld. De composities van George zijn vandaag de dag nog steeds goed beluisterbaar en kunnen in een moderne setting zó opnieuw gebruikt worden. Het bewijs wordt geleverd door het lied Rhapsody in Blue uit 1924, die een aantal keer in de Top 2000 stond. Maar het bekendste voorbeeld is natuurlijk het tijdloze Summertime, dat ontelbare keren door ontelbare artiesten is gecoverd. meer
