Vierne's 24 Pièces en style libre zijn populair, al was het alleen maar omdat gevorderde orgelamateurs ze kunnen spelen. Juist voor hen is het een mooie oefening in lastige kruisen en mollen. In de 24 stukken komen namelijk alle 24 standaard toonsoorten voorbij. Vierne componeerde deze voor zowel harmonium als voor (pijp-) orgel, al dan niet met pedaal.
