Robert Casadesus (1899-1972) belongs to the category of prominent twentieth-century performing musicians - he was a famous pianist - who are hardly known to have also profiled themselves as composers. After completing his studies at the Paris Conservatory at the age of fourteen, he initially wrote piano music that he could perform at his own concerts. However, he did not avoid the more prestigious
… genres, as is clear from the three symphonies on this CD. Symphony No. 1 Op.19 was created in the years 1934/1935 and has a clear neoclassical cut. This characteristic is even more apparent in Symphony No. 5.60, which, according to the subtitle, is a tribute to Haydn. Symphony No. 7 op.68, completed in 1970, has a completely different elaboration. The work has the nickname ' Israel 'and is distinguished by the collaboration of four vocal soloists and choir, who sing exclusively vocalizing - without text -, which produces a somewhat unusual sound image. Although of impeccable invoice, the music does not leave too strong an emphasis; nevertheless it is worthwhile to acquaint yourself with an unknown side of Casadesus. (JvG)more
