Beethoven also sometimes read what reviewers wrote about his music. He once faced a criticism of his 'Die Schlacht bei Vittoria' and saw that the reviewer complained that an eminent composer like Beethoven had engaged in a simplistic theme such as the musical painting of a battle. He wrote his reaction in the margin: 'Oh you miserable bastard! What I say is even better than anything you've ever… imagined!
