Gustav Holst is still known almost exclusively for his suite "The Planets" and thus not only his other works have fallen into obscurity, but also other sides of his oeuvre. The interesting thing about this CD is that it offers a cross-section of early and late works and thus an interesting view of his development. From around 1910, the Seven Scottish Airs and St. Paul's Suite bear witness to his
… interest in English folk music. The "Fugal Concerto" (1923), for string orchestra and two soloists (Malcolm Massiter, oboe and Edward Beckett, flute), is written in a chamber-style musical style and allows the listener to share Holst's reviving interest in counterpoint. The Lyric Movement, for viola (Rachel Bolt) and orchestra is part of an uncompleted work that Holst began a few months before his death.
