In 1912, confidence in the modern era was seriously shaken by the sinking of the Titanic. "And as the smart ship grew / In stature, grace, and hue, / In shadowy silent distance grew the Iceberg too", says the poem Thomas Hardy wrote in response to this tragedy. Organist Joseph Bonnet responded to this event with his "In memoriam - Titanic" opus 10, nr. 1. The work can be heard on the seventh CD of
… the successful series "Organ fireworks" by Christopher Herrick. "In memoriam - Titanic" is aptly followed on this CD by "Nearer my God to Thee, op.81" by Sigfrid Karg-Elert; The story goes that this hymn was played on the Titanic while the ship sank. Organ fireworks vol.VII also includes works by Alexandre Guilmant, Gaston Litaize, Lefébure-Wély, Julius Reubke ("Sonata on Psalm 94"), et al. Christopher Herrick plays these works on the impressive organ of the Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavik (Klais, 1992). _more
