All the works on this CD are exemplary demonstrations of how to harmonize and arrange Gregorian melodies in a melodious way. Duruflé had a limited palette in that respect, or so it seems when we consider his small oeuvre and conservative style. Yet the Requiem alone is one of the most moving compositions of the 20th century. It is precisely the flexibility of Gregorian chant and the colors of the
… old church styles that give this Requiem a look that comes across as very authentic and honest. Thus the Pie Jesu is no more than a single tension arc. Mezzo-soprano Elsbeth Gerritsen and organist Hayo Boerema, however, show nicely how effective this tension is; Duruflé was certainly more dramatic here than Fauré. The Laurens Collegium Rotterdam was founded in 2002 by Barend Schuurman. Wiecher Mandemaker is now the leader of this successful professional ensemble. (HJ)more
