It has been quiet for a while around Erik Van Nevel's Currende ensemble. Their last CD is already four years old, but now they are back with a beautiful recording. The never-before-recorded Magnificat by Cipriano de Rore is central. That piece only lasts just over seven minutes, which is why it is supplemented here with a nice collection of motets. Moreover, all these works are preceded by organ
… improvisations by Bart Jacobs. Even though the whole may be somewhat constructed, it does work. Currende shows beautiful performances of De Rore's beautiful music. Of course the singing is beautiful, but the polyphony can also be heard exemplary. This is certainly also due to the recording, which is clear but also warm. Not that many CDs are devoted to De Rore's work, so this recording is highly recommended. (TC)more
