They were never just a band, the London company The Real Tuesday Weld around Stephen Coates, aka The Clerkenwell Kid. Their electro swing noir was always steeped in pre-war nostalgia in the form of cabaret, vaudeville and expressionist black and white films, finished off with a dark and morbid sauce. … the plug on the group. The album Blood and the cassette Tape Dust Memories wrapped in a blood donor bag are farewell releases on which samples of earlier work are used. The capricious and burlesque songs on these two works sound tidy, but in the meantime they are populated by murderers and outcasts. Real Tuesday Weld never managed to achieve more than a cult status, but this unique outcast band will definitely be missed. Blood and Tape Dust Memories are proof of that. (MR)more
