The Netherlands is still important in the early music world (just see the many international students in The Hague Conservatory), and this CD box will undoubtedly do well in our country. This is a wonderful collection of eight CDs, which introduces us to an enormous amount of instruments. From the fiddle, the hurdy-gurdy, the curved horn and the lute to the psalterium, the clavichord and the timbal:
we find images, explanations and of course a large number of music fragments of all instruments. The Ricercar label has not only drawn on its own recordings, but also on those of other labels (including renowned old music labels such as Alpha, Glossa and Fuga Libera). This makes it clear that this is not just a glorified collector: this box has been put together really carefully. In a few evenings behind the stereo with this book on your lap you will get to know the enormous wealth of instrumental music, from the Middle Ages to the Classical era. In short, this bulky CD box is an essential reference book for early music lovers. (TC)more
