The now 74-year-old Paul Van Nevel continues to work on the road. You could see the title of this 3CD box as a programmatic statement, because Van Nevel has been showing the magic of polyphony (polyphony) for decades. The recordings of this box were made in June 2019 during a two-day festival entirely dedicated to and performed by… Van Nevel's own Huelgas Ensemble. In seven concerts they have
… performed works that can rarely be heard live. The company also took room for a number of experiments, such as the Agnus Dei of Marbrianus de Orto's Missa Dominicalis, in which all singers are allowed to determine for themselves which syllable of the text falls exactly where. (This was usually not indicated in the manuscripts in the Renaissance.) We also hear, surprisingly, a motet by Anton Bruckner. Otherwise, however, this is a very nice anthology of lesser known vocal polyphony, beautifully performed by the members of the Huelgas Ensemble. (TC)more
