It takes ten seconds before Lotte van Dijck's debut grabs you by the throat, to keep you from letting go for forty-eight minutes. The moment the dark intro of the song Daglicht is supported by the clear voice of Van Dijck, you know that this CD is all right. The singer has a resume to be jealous of. Together with Marjoleine Reitsma she won the Grand Prix of the Netherlands in 1997 in the singer /
… songwriter category and made two albums. She also wrote books, film music (including for Eddy Terstalls Sextet) and theater pieces. With Empty Places In The City, this centipede can add another successful chapter to her life story. Van Dijck's songs have poetic lyrics, daring chords and rhythms, but still remain listenable. The production brings out the voice of Van Dijck well and keeps the accompaniment sparingly. Not everyone will always find the thirteen quiet gems equally exciting, but for those who make the effort can count on a revelation. (JE)more
