It seems that Freek de Jonge has chosen a new profession: musician. It might suit him better than his old craft as a comedian, which some say he was no longer because of a waning sense of humor. On his previous studio album Van A Naar Z (2010) - the first since he collaborated with Bram Vermeulen in a previous life - he still used external composers, on Zonde are the melodies of De Jonge himself.
And those are excellent melodies. They fit well with the theater nestor's lyrics. The songs are melancholic, poetic and show craftsmanship. De Jonge received a lot of help on this CD and not from the least: Van Dyke Parks played the piano on a number of songs, something that Freek de Jonge is very proud of. Eric Vloeimans, Anne Soldaat, Tim Knol, Bertolf, it is just a selection of the famous musicians who played on this album. They provide a nice rich, layered sound without being bombastic. It sounds as if Freek de Jonge has invited all his friends home to come and make music. And that's exactly how it went. Chapeau. (HF)more
