It's not entirely fair to start with every review about Charles Aznavour's age, but then: how many 91-year-olds can say they still enjoy doing their job? Aznavour does, also on his 51st (!) Album Encores. Of course Aznavour no longer sounds as vital as when he was thirty, but his voice sounds like a man who has seen everything. At Encores, the singer looks back on a long and eventful life. In the
… impressive Chez Fanny, for example, he reminisces about the Parisian bar where members of the French resistance met during the Second World War. In the closing track You've Got To Learn, it appears that Aznavour still has an eye for young talent. He sings the duet with Benjamin Clementine, who made a creditable debut in Aznavour's 91st year of life. So retirement is still a long way off for Aznavour. Around the release of this album, the chansonnier will perform six times in the Palais des Sports, the only concert hall in Paris where he has never sung before. (PdK)more
