On his new album Pure, Rene Froger takes up the success of the vocal jazz of Norah Jones and relatives and the albums based on the American songbook by pop artists such as Robbie Williams and Rod Stewart. Of course, technically accompanied by a reality soap on SBS6, according to the proven recipe of the Bauers, the Curry's and Patty Brard. Few artists can so transparently pick up on the issues of
… the day and get away with it time and again. And sure enough, the approach seems to work on the first half of Pure. In a handful of less well-known but well-chosen songs, Froger sings remarkably restrained and small for himself. Things go wrong halfway through. Well-known evergreens like This Guy's In Love With You and The Look Of Love get that heavy interpretation, as a result of which they will undoubtedly be put back in the football canteen. Froger would do better to focus on material that has not yet proven itself. (MS)more
