From the nineties on, more and more compilation albums appear that collect forgotten gems from the sixties and seventies. Labels such as Analog Africa, Strut and Soul Jazz not only put soul and funk, but also dance music from Africa and Latin America back on the map. From Peru came compilation albums with cumbia and the chicha, two dance styles that were popular in the slums of Lima. One of the
… additional advantages of the offer of those many compilation albums is that the musicians of that time are once again in the limelight. Seven Peruvian cumbia veterans, now in their sixties, will reunite in 2013 under the name Cumbia All Stars. Together they storm the stages of Europe and North America. The recipe is simple dance music with an irresistible groove on which even the largest wooden Klaas can easily swing along. There is a leading role for the winding guitar lines that give the music an alienating effect. (PdK)more
