The Senegalese singer and guitarist Mansour Seck, from the caste of the 'griots' (the caste of the singers and storytellers), has a lot in common with his more famous colleague Baaba Maal. Both were born and raised in Podor and belong to the minority group of the 'Fulani'. Because Seck suffers from hereditary blindness, Maal accompanied him on his tours through Africa. The two childhood friends have
… performed together a lot. Their close friendship is evident from the fact that, when Maal received a scholarship to study music in Paris, he also sent Seck over as soon as possible. Later they went their separate ways musically. Maal started to experiment with modern music and Seck stayed true to the griot tradition. The album "Thiaroye" therefore contains traditional West African music, in which Seck addresses topics such as Senegalese culture, traditions and social problems. With a powerful voice and excellent guitar playing, Seck creates music that sparkles with clean, simple melodies and hypnotic rhythms. (SvdP) _more
