Omar Ka is a Senegalese living in Rotterdam. He comes from the West African tribe the Fulani, a nomadic people. After the drought of the 1970s, Omar's family was forced to settle in the capital, Dakar, where Omar's musical talent blossomed. Until 1996 Omar traveled with his Fula Band through West Africa, until he decided to settle in Rotterdam. In his music he tries to enrich the old African music
… tradition with Western influences. It has taken him to countless international music festivals, with the closing performance at the 2004 Dunya festival as the highlight for now. The lyrics on his second CD are sung in the Fula language, but in the CD booklet the songs are explained in English. The concept of Soruuna is central: the time the nomads spend together at the end of the day, in which they learn and enjoy each other. A festive CD in which there is also room for melancholy and homesickness. (MS)more
