Music from Argentina is more than tango. This country is rich in all kinds of folk styles such as chamamé, chacarera, zamba and milonga. The greatest representative of this folk repertoire is Mercedes Sosa. This expressive and charismatic singer of protest songs is also a figurehead for human rights, democracy and freedom. Shortly after her 70th birthday, the album Corazón Libre was released, her
… first studio recording since the Latin Grammy Award-winning album Misa Criolla (1999). On this fully acoustic CD, Sosa sings folk classics such as Zamba De Argamonte and Tonada Del Otoño, as well as songs by contemporary Argentine poets and songwriters. Her accompaniment consists of subtle percussion by Facundo Guevara and Chango Farías Gómez and beautiful guitar playing by Luis Salinas, Edoardo Falú, among others. Alberto Rojo and her loyal companion Jorge Giuliano. Sosa sings the sixteen quiet songs in a remarkably modest way; full of vulnerability, tenderness and melancholy. Corazón Libre also contains beautiful contributions from guest singers Pocho Sosa and cousin Coqui Sosa and funny drawings by Sosa's girlfriend and fan Joan Baez. (SvdP)more
