69 years later, the famous feature film All About Eve from 1950 was a theater adaptation by the Dutch director Ivo van Hove. The play was staged at London's Noël Coward Theater, starring actresses Gillian Anderson and Lily James. The versatile British artist Polly Jean Harvey provided the accompanying music. You cannot tell from her compositions that All About Eve is originally a bittersweet farce.
The thin, neo-classical sounds rather refer to the haunting atmosphere of her own album White Chalk from 2007. Special are the vocal contributions of both Anderson and James, who both have beautiful, clear voices. Harvey himself does not sing, but plays a variety of keys in this theater music that is as solemn as it is atmospheric. (MR)more
