Winning an Oscar with one of your first films must be the dream of any soundtrack composer. Steven Price (1977) supported a number of well-known film composers as a technician, including and , before writing his first film score in 2011. Two years later he was single-handedly responsible for a soundtrack for the first time at The World's End. In addition to this space film, he worked that year on
… another movie that takes place outside our atmosphere: Gravity. Director Alfonso Cuarón's film scored very high at the 86th Academy Awards, winning seven Oscars, including Best Soundtrack. Price has chosen a modern mix of digital techniques and an old-fashioned symphony orchestra to accompany Cuarón's film. The classical instruments are processed into contemporary sounding collages, but also retain something familiar. The common trick of cutting slowly swelling strings just before the climax betrays Price's pedigree as a music editor.
