The critics of Joop van den Ende's musical Mother, Ik Wil Bij De Revue (2014) were unanimous in praise. That could hardly be otherwise, because the television series of the same name from 2013 that served as the basis for this spectacle was already a great success. And that series also harked back to a tried and tested concept, namely the performance of well-known Dutch songs from a bygone era, when
… the Netherlands was still a small, cozy country without all kinds of annoying problems. The successful 2006 remake of 't Schaep Met Vijf Poten actually had the same formula. The musical version of Mother, Ik Wil at De Revue is also blessed with a star cast (Jon van Eerd, Simone Kleinsma) and a great orchestra. Nothing seems to be left to chance on this (live recorded) recording. Mother's story, Ik Wil Bij De Revue takes place in the fifties - always a good setting for a clear story - but strangely enough the music mainly comes from the years after. Well-known songs by Frans Halsema, Gerard Cox and especially Wim Sonneveld provide a true sing-along party. (JE)more
