Buddy Guy's albums are often as predictable as the blues he plays. Since Skin Deep (2008) his albums have been produced and written by drummer Tom Hambridge. The drumming producer provides material that seems to come straight from the guitarist's own pen. Born To Play Guitar, their fourth collaboration in seven years, also looks back on Guy's eventful life. Hambridge is actually the biographer of
… the American who was born in Louisiana in 1936. Another regular feature on Guy's albums is the guest appearances from a number of famous fans. On this disc they are Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Kim Wilson (The Fabulous Thunderbirds), Joss Stone and Van Morrison. Especially the guitar playing of Gibbons on the song Wear You Out is a nice addition to the already strong record. Born To Play Guitar is yet another proof that Guy has a great tone in his fingers. After the first beautiful solo, you immediately forgive him for choosing the same recipe again. After all, Buddy's blues doesn't change either. (JE)more
