After the soundtrack of "Kansas City", a Robert Altman film, a CD was released with recordings that were not selected for this film but were initially intended for it. The ten tracks on "KC after dark" didn't make it to the film, but they are definitely worth it for fans of jazz. It is actually a sequel to the first CD, with the same top performance from various jazz musicians, including Don Byron,
… James Carter, Joshua Redman, David "Fathead" Newman, Geri Allen, Cyrus Chestnut, Ron Carter, Christian McBride and Victor Lewis. Songs like "St. Louis Blues", "Cherokee", "Harvard blues", "Tickle toe" and "(Back home again in) Indiana" (in quartet and septet line-up) are played. Also impressive is "Piano boogie" with pianists Geri Allen and Cyrus Chestnut, who both wrote the song. With the clubs of that time, the atmosphere of that time is perfectly brought back by these top jazz musicians, who happily improvise with the musical insights of the time; also a big advantage is the modern sound quality of today.
