A new CD from the top jazz pianist Herbie Hancock. The 11 tracks are surprising. These are pop songs, which are elevated to 'new standards' by Hancock. This high-level CD features songs from songwriters like Paul Simon / Art Garfunkel (Scarborough fair) to Kurt Cobain (All apologies, a special performance with an electric sitar). And so on this CD you can also find songs from Lennon / McCartney
… (Norwegian wood), Sade (Love is stronger than pride) and Peter Gabriel (Mercy street). What is also striking is that all top jazz musicians can be heard on this CD. Heavy drumming by Jack DeJohnette, beautiful bass lines and solos by Dave Holland, the specific guitar playing by John Scofield, intriguing percussion by Don Alias and very strong playing by saxophonist Michael Brecker. The arrangements are from Hancock himself and Bob Belden. A wind / string section can still be heard on some tracks. The strings sound beautiful on When can I see you by Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds and form a beautiful whole with the electric percussion. The performance of Thieves in the temple by Prince should also be mentioned: this one is swinging, soulful and funky.more
