Heavy jazz comes from the Dick de Graaf Septet. On his CD The Burning Of The Midnight Lamp, tenor saxophonist Dick de Graaf pays tribute to a man he admires from his early years: Jimi Hendrix. In the beginning De Graaf also wanted to become a guitarist, but eventually the saxophone became his instrument. Six compositions on this CD are by Hendrix, one was written by De Graaf himself, Dicke Luft.
Hendrix's six compositions are: Manic Depression, Little Wing, Voodoo Chile, Angel, The Burning Of The Midnight Lamp and Purple Haze. This CD does not pretend to be a social or historical document of Hendrix's work, but it gives the personal memory that De Graaf has with Hendrix's music. De Graaf was accompanied for this CD by guitarist Wim Bronnenberg, bassist Eric Calmes, violinist Michael Gustorff, trombonist Hans Sparla, 'steel drummer' Konkie Halmeyer and drummer Hans van Oosterhout. These musicians are well attuned to each other and are given enough space by De Graaf to profile themselves within his septet. (JW)more
