Saxophonist James Carter likes to put everyone on the wrong track. He does this by constantly changing styles. Incidentally, this keeps him and his fans flexible. This time he has made a CD with music by jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt: Chasin 'The Gypsy, in which he shows his more romantic side. Because Carter is Carter there is enough interpretation in the style and arrangements to keep the music
… surprising. Also through the use of his choice of saxophones (bass, tenor, soprano and the not so common f mezzo), the addition of the accordion and the nylon-string guitar, he manages to lead the music into uncharted paths. With a top line-up of Regina Carter on violin, Jay Berliner and Romero Lubambo on guitars and Joey Baron on drums, the thirties music of Django Reinhardt gets a great uplift. (RM) _more
