In 2003 trumpet player Randy Brecker decided to tour with tenor saxophonist Bob Berg under the name Soulbop Band. Berg was tragically killed in a collision and the plan was called off until Brecker found a suitable successor in Bill Evans. As the name suggests, Soulbop plays soul jazz and bebop, but also funk, fusion and ballads. Especially the power of the game is the first thing you notice. The
… energy with which Rattletrap is deployed is maintained across the board on this double CD. Thanks to the solidly grooving rhythm section consisting of Victor Bailey (bass) and Steve Smith (drums) and the funky guitar of Hiram Bullock, even the most complicated fusion pieces keep swinging constantly. Even the fact that Brecker and Bullock aren't the world's greatest vocalists, shouldn't spoil the fun. The fun radiates from this CD. (AD)more
