After witnessing a battle between tenor saxophonists during the North Sea Jazz Festival, Boris Vanderlek decided that he wanted to play tenor saxophone. History has now proven that this was the right decision. At Blue & Sentimental, tenor saxophonist Boris Vanderlek from The Hague takes you on a journey through the history of jazz as a guide. Vanderlek provides his favorite compositions including
… Bag's Groove (Milt Jackson), Blue & Sentimental (Count Basie), Doxy (Sonny Rollins), Blue Monk (Thelonious Monk) and Blues March (Bobby Timmons) with enough color not to be inferior to those who have gone before him. His strength is especially evident in the quiet, carried songs. His accompaniment consists of Han Bennink (snare drum), Ton Van Bergeik (guitar), Hein van de Geyn (bass) and Thijs van Leer (Hammond B3) for a velvety soft carpet over which Vanderlek can drape his warm tones. Especially in Body & Soul the influences of Vanderlek's favorite tenor Ben Webster come to the fore most. (AD)more
