Immediately on the first song of Nerve you get in a good mood. There you have another Dutch musician who knows how to make a tenor sax sound full! The song Joropita is dedicated to Michael Brecker, but with its sound Cyrille Oswald is more reminiscent of Joshua Redman or, because of the Latin atmosphere, of the Puerto Rican David Sanchez. That is not surprising, because Oswald spent several years
… in the Caribbean. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and is part of the Cubop City Big Band, among others. For his third CD Nerve he asked bassist Stefan Lievestro and drummer Erik Kooger to accompany him. The latter plays quite busy and loud, but that gives the CD a pleasant energy level. You can also hear pianist Jeroen van Vliet. In Eindelijk Oswald plays soprano sax à la Wayne Shorter. Together with Van Vliets Fender Rhodes, this evokes the atmosphere of Weather Report's first album. Cyrille Oswald has delivered a nice CD with Nerve. (HB)more
