With Reserge, a tribute to the baritone saxophonist / composer Serge Chaloff, the Netherlands has added a new jazz formation with The Reeds. As the name suggests, reed players are well represented. Founder Rik van den Bergh (baritone sax) invited besides Marco Kegel (alto sax) and Simon Rigter (tenor sax) with whom he partly occupies the front row of the wind section of the Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra,
… also Jan Smit (alto sax) of the Young Sinatras, Sjoerd Dijkhuizen (tenor sax), Erik Doelman (piano), Frans van Geest (bass) and Gijs Dijkhuizen (drums) from. The eight of them revive post-war swing jazz in an authentic way. Especially Chaloff's time as a member of the Four Brothers sax section of the Woody Herman Band (1947-1949) is extensively illustrated with pieces such as Chickasaw, a variation on the chord progression of the well-known Cherokee, and Bopscotch, one of Chaloff's personal favorites. The Brothers written by Rigter, a tribute to this sax section, could have been recorded sixty years ago without difficulty. (AD)more
