While his previous CD Free At Last (2003) was a nice fusion project, the Dutch top saxophonist Toon Roos is 'back' to pure (neo) bop on Love Revisited. The CD is largely devoted to the music of Miles Davis in the mid-1960s. This is evident from the repertoire choice, with standards such as On Green Dolphin Street, Footprints and I Fall In Love Too Easily, all straight from Miles' songbook. This is
… certainly also evident from the way Toon Roos and his fellow musicians play pianist Karel Boehlee, bassist Hein Van de Geyn and drummer Joost van Schaik. Already in the first song, Charlie Parkers Au Privave, the company puts down a solid swing with a lot of variety in rhythms, dynamics and the division of roles between soloist and accompaniment. This continues at a very high level throughout the entire CD. As always, Toon Roos has a fantastic full, yet loose sound on his tenor sax and once again shows that he is one of the few who is also completely in control of the soprano sax. (HB)more
