With his quartet at the time, with the young dogs Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette, saxophonist / flutist Charles Lloyd was a welcome guest at Flower Power festivals in the late 1960s, between hippie acts such as The Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. Lloyd showed the avant-garde of Coltrane in his sound and solos, but without the sharp edges. Unfortunately, the well-known demons took drugs, depression,
… and frustration with the music industry, and Lloyd disappeared from the scene in the early 1970s. It wasn't until about twenty years later that he started making CDs again. He still manages to gather the best young jazz musicians around him. On Rabo De Nube these are pianist Jason Moran, bassist Rueben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland. On this live recorded CD they are given ample opportunity to show their skills in broadly drawn-out modal compositions. Lloyd himself also sounds very good and continues to evoke memories of Coltrane with his clear tenor sound. (HB)more
