What could be better than a jazz quartet with a trombone player? A band with more trombones, for example six! The successful Dutch trombonist and composer Ilja Reijngoud must have thought something similar when he expanded his regular quartet with five trombones for his latest CD. Fortunately, anyone who expects heavy costs with such a combination will be disappointed. If you like copper at least
… a bit, Untamed World will give you a nice CD. The rhythm section, including the ubiquitous pianist Rob van Bavel and guitarist Martijn van Iterson, keeps the momentum going and gives the CD a modern sound. Above that, the full sound of the trombones of Reijngoud, Bart van Lier, Jörgen van Rijen, Jan Oosting and Martin van den Berg's bass trombone can be heard. Reijngoud also designed the beautiful arrangements, with the highlight being the six-part interpretation of Stella By Starlight. (HB)more
