Hammond and jazz. With this combination you usually think of the bluesy hard bop of Jimmy Smith and the groovy soul jazz of Jimmy McGriff and Jack McDuff. You didn't see much of a more in-depth harmonic application of the 'tonewheel organ'. The only exception from the sixties was Larry Young, who showed on Unity that Coltrane harmonies also sound great on electric organ. Today it is Larry Goldings
… and Sam Yahel who apply the Hammond in a somewhat more profound way. Yahel has been playing in a trio with saxophonist Joshua Redman and drummer Brian Blade for several years now. This combination released albums under different names, such as YaYa 3 and Joshua Redman's Elastic Band. While a lot of funky jazz rock was played under the latter banner, Truth And Beauty consists for the most part of more jazz-oriented compositions by Yahel. Redman has even left his effects box at home and plays pure sax. Truth And Beauty lives up to its name and offers honest and beautiful jazz. (HB)more
