Guitarist Jesse van Ruller is one of our contemporary jazz icons who is just as at home in ripping jazz rock as in more traditional jazz. Nevertheless, he surprised at the end of 2010 with the CD Chamber Tones. He had never shown such a sensitive and warm side as on this album full of atmospheric chamber jazz, which he recorded with clarinetist Joris Roelofs and bassist Clemens van der Feen. The
… trio now operates as the Chamber Tones Trio and recorded this rightful successor in a church in the rustic West Frisian village of Aartswoud. The Ninth Planet radiates an almost sacred tranquility in twelve, mainly own compositions and improvisations. Three virtuoso musicians can be heard here, who together play a classical repertoire with a sense of tranquility, with a feeling for jazz traditions and sometimes slightly swinging but consciously never jumping out of the band. The surprise is a bit off although the playing is no less inspired than on the debut. (MR)more
