The American alto saxophonist and composer Kenny Garrett played with Miles Davis in his late days and then developed into a much sought-after side-man alongside Brad Mehldau and McCoy Tyner, among others. … Away is mainly hot-blooded. The oiled, often uptempo post bop was mainly injected with Latin influences this time. It is only in the tail that Garrett wants to slow down, as in the smoothly written by Jean Baylor Homma Son and the ballad Brother Brown, which is carried and enriched with strings. But Pushing The Sky Away is above all a tidy and swinging album by Garrett and his band at their best. (MR)more
