The first album of (Dan Berglund's) Tonbruket was born out of the urgency of Swedish bassist Dan Berglund to come to terms with the loss of pianist Esbjörn Svensson, in whose pioneering trio (EST) he played for years. The group he formed with pianist Martin Hederos, guitarist Johan Lindström and drummer Andreas Werliin turned out to be very strong, however, and is now working steadily towards a
… status that almost transcends EST. The quartet shares a love for jazz, folk music, classical music and rock and also shuns any convention, in order to achieve their own, layered jazz rock in which atmosphere and interplay win over isolation and complexity. They proudly rented a space at London's Abbey Road Studios to record in the footsteps of The Beatles and Pink Floyd. And of course the result recorded in three days has little to do with that. The title piece, for example, sounds like the soundtrack of a weird spy film from the sixties and Lindström lets his steel guitar howl desolately in the Americana-like Liga. Somewhere in between is this third album on which Tonbruket proves as a collective to be incredibly creative and indestructible. (MR)more
