Cellist Ernst Reijseger, pianist Harmen Fraanje and singer and player of traditional African instruments Mola Sylla are three celebrities in Dutch jazz, avant-garde and world fusion. Together they form a unique trio that loves every musical boundary. Their second album Count Till Zen picks up where their impressive 2013 debut Down Deep left off. The solemn atmosphere of that first album is now more
… broken. Reijseger can still make his five-string cello sound like an African string or percussion instrument, but it also screeches and scratches his strings. Sylla also sometimes supplements his Senegalese chants with experimental guttural sounds, while Fraanje mainly uses his piano as a rhythm instrument. To capture the intense atmosphere between these three daring musicians at its purest, producer Stefan Winter recorded them live in the studio with just a stereo microphone. Reijseger, Fraanje and Sylla once again make a big impression with this album that is as intimate as it is colorful. (MR)more
