The sixth album by Norwegian saxophonist and composer Marius Neset is certainly his most ambitious. He wrote the music of Circle Of Chimes for a concert that was performed in Cologne on New Year's Day 2016. With recurring glockenspiel as a guideline, Neset connects jazz with classical chamber music and African sounds. His octet includes cellist and Neset's classically trained sister on flute and
… piccolo. In contrast, Benin guitarist also and sings in his own language. And of course there is a lot of tight and smoothly played jazz, with whimsical melodies and the almost -like craziness we also know from previous Neset albums. The still young Neset (1985) made an organically diverse and explosive work with Circle Of Chimes. (MR)more
