Nice to know about Norwich: the 230,000 inhabitants spend on average more on culture than anywhere else in the United Kingdom. And although its cultural reputation is based more on literature than music, in recent years at least two very interesting acts have come out of the city in the east of England:
Let's Eat Grandma and Mammal Hands. Musically miles apart, but both very quirky. With Mammal
… Hands it starts with the line-up: piano, drums and saxophone/clarinet (no bass!), combining jazz with folk, modern classical, world music, electronic dance and the minimal music of artists like Steve Reich and Terry Riley. A bit like the former labelmates GoGo Penguin, but much more exciting. Listen to how Late Bloomer - one of the highlights on this rock solid fourth album - is built up layer after layer, culminating in a ripping saxophone solo. Or the conjuring Spiral Stair.
