In 1980 trumpeter Tom Browne scored a world hit with Funkin' For Jamaica. This was no mean feat, because the presence of a jazz artist in the charts was a rare phenomenon at the time and only reserved for
George Benson. He would never score such a big hit again after that. In contrast to many of his colleagues who have gone down the smooth jazz path, Browne has remained true to funk all this time.
Not with the same fervor as in 1980, but still. So too on Come What May, an album full of laid back funk and a cover of The Groove Line from Heatwave that was written by Rod Temperton who, along with Quincy Jones, was responsible for the huge success of Michael Jackson. The odd one out is the Christmas song Angels We Have Heard On High. Browne probably didn't feel like recording a whole Christmas CD. (AD)more
