Dutch saxophonist Joris Posthumus has now found his second home in Japan, it seems. Posthumus, who studied in Rotterdam and Tilburg, previously released work with his own quartet (
The Abyss, 2010) and collaborated on tributes to
Ornette Coleman (
Peace: Ode To The Music Of Ornette Coleman, 2015) and
Leo Cuypers (
Zeeland Suite Revisited, 2015). Since he recorded
Tokyo's Bad Boys with a group of Japanese
… jazz musicians in 2016, he has been increasingly frequent in the Asian country. In 2020, just before the corona pandemic, he recorded Jinsei, which is finally being released more than four years later. It contains nine calm, melodic compositions, with certain cinematic qualities. With two additional saxophonists and a trumpet player, the horns have a clear leading role in this ensemble. The seven musicians sound like a cohesive unit. Quite understandable that Posthumus enjoys traveling to the other side of the world to play with this club. (JV)more
