American jazz pianist Myra Melford put together the quintet in 2019 that led to the album For The Love Of Fire And Water (2022). Hear The Light Singing is the follow-up - with drummer Lesley Mok replacing percussionist
Susie Ibarra. Melford's ideas and compositions form the basis of the material. Her style of composing and playing can sometimes be called alienating, yet always remains easy to follow
… in terms of structures and melodies. In any case, she clearly inspires the other members of the quintet with it. For example, Mary Halvorson's guitar solo at the end of Insertion One is one that she could not have played over much music. In this case, it sounds beautifully placed. Thus, the entire album is full of moments that at first seem complicated or far-fetched, but on closer listening sound inventive and at the same time perfectly logical. (JV)more
