Brass player Daniel Herskedal does nothing but create Movements Of Air - moving air. When he does that with a tuba, it leads - in his case - to beautiful music. In Movements Of Air, Herskedal, pianist Eyolf Dale and drummer Helge Andreas Norbakken use minimal means to express great emotions. Herskedal composed melodies that are effortlessly noted, yet retain a certain restraint, with a carpet-like
… sound underneath. Also beautiful is the influence of Middle Eastern and Indian music that can be heard in Hersekedal's playing and compositions. Norbakken's frequent use of low toms gives the music something ominous, which is welcome: pieces that lean toward ambient thus naturally command attention. Movements Of Air is, especially for its simple and strong melodies and long drawn-out build-up, a very strong record. (JV)more
