A simple look at Pat Metheny's discography shows that the American is at home in all markets. In 2003 he was asked to be artist in residence at the North Sea Jazz Festival, which means as much as: work your way around and play as many concerts as possible. Metheny played six, including Michiel Borstlap. Of these six concerts, the impressive collaboration with the Metropole Orchestra was broadcast
… in its entirety by the NPS. This registration is now available on DVD. At first glance this is an unofficial version, but that should not spoil the fun. Metheny plays one after the other dexterous solo, not a trace of fatigue to be seen. The Metropole Orkest, led by conductor Jim McNeely, not only provides support. Various members also receive a few solos. Besides all the musical splendor, it is also fun to watch this DVD. Besides the neatly inserted orchestra members, it seems as if Metheny is playing in a discarded jersey. The guitarist must have been too busy to worry about that. (JE)more
