If you put on With A Song In My Heart, you will be put on the wrong track. Did the Amsterdam police make a mistake when, in 1988, they mistook the lifeless body that had fallen / pushed / jumped out of a window of a hotel on Prins Hendrikkade as that of Chet Baker? When after the first verse not a velvety trumpet solo follows, but a nice clean guitar, you still conclude that this must be a different
… one. And indeed: it is not Chet Baker who sings and solos here, but John Pizzarelli. 'Sings the music of Richard Rodgers' is the subtitle of his latest CD and that is exactly what is happening. In quartet line-up, supported on some tracks by seven wind players, Pizzarelli sings with the utmost skill in Rodgers classics such as the title track, It's Easy To Remember, The Lady Is A Tramp and She Was Too Good To Me. Of course father Bucky Pizarelli is also present for a guitar solo here and there. The umpteenth extremely pleasant, swinging and very neat CD in the Pizzarelli oeuvre. (HB)more
