Wyclef Jean does his best on his second solo CD to prove that he is (was?) The creative brain behind The Fugees. We haven't heard much from that trio (Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill and Pras) since 1996's The Score, and it is also questionable whether that will happen. Ecleftic opens with the mini radio play Columbia Records, in which Wyclef announces his new solo CD, but is told by his record boss that
… he has to make another Fugees record. From the song that follows, Where Fugees At ?, it can be concluded that the chances of this are not too great. The Ecleftic is not always a fascinating CD with pop, ska, reggae and a lot of hip hop. Nice are the Kenny Rogers and Whitney Houston parodies, good are the hit It Doesn't Matter, Runaway (with Earth, Wind & Fire) and the impressive Diallo (with Youssou N'Dour). But due to the presence of just too many boring (hip-hop) tracks, the album is nowhere near the level of Lauryn Hills The Miseducation Of, for example. (WvdZ)more
