Contrary to the relative unknown in the Netherlands, the British guitar-rock trio Stereophonics enjoys star status in its homeland. Most copies of the debut album Word Gets Around (approx. 1 million) and the follow-up from '99 Performance And Cocktails (approx. 2 million) were sold in the country that seems to have a patent on good melodic rock bands (Supergrass, Manic Street Preachers, Oasis).
Stereophonics is classified under 'britpop' but on Just Enough Education To Perform actually sounds very American (read: bold). Just listen to the raw Rod Stewart-esque vocals of frontman Kelly Jones and the heavy guitar parts (Nice To Be Out). However, the album also offers a large number of ballads (the single Mr. Writer), so that the album is varied and the band reminds you of a tidy sounding Black Crowes (Rooftop). Take the harmonious choirs (Have A Nice Day) and Stereophonics will win many hearts at Pinkpop 2001. (BP)more
