Suzanne Vega is back to square one. In Mitchell Froom, the singer / songwriter once found the ideal producer for her fragile songs, after which she even tied the knot with him. When the marriage broke up, Suzanne had to find another producer. The job went to Rupert Hine, who previously made records with Tina Turner and Stevie Nicks. Together with him, Suzanne has returned to the intimate sound of
… her first albums. That will be a relief for the fans from the very beginning. After all, they had largely dropped out when Suzanne started experimenting with dance rhythms, more or less tapping into the success that the mixers of DNA had with their version of Tom's Dinner. Artistically these records were certainly successful, although the charm of Suzanne's songs was in danger of being snowed under by all the production antics. Songs In Red And Gray still echoes these productions, but the emphasis is on Suzanne's acoustic guitar. Hine provided a suitable musical accompaniment to Vega's personal songs, who clearly used this record to write off the frustrations surrounding the divorce. It took more than five years, but the new record by Suzanne Vega appears to be worth the wait. (MS) It took more than five years, but the new record by Suzanne Vega appears to be worth the wait.
